Our Pastor

Pastor / Head of Staff: Dr. Robert William Lowry

Rob joined the Fondren staff in January 2017. Most recently he served as the Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Arkansas. Since his ordination in 2001 he has served churches in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Michigan and taught as an adjunct faculty member at both Hendrix College and the University of the Ozarks.

An Arkansas native, Rob grew up in Little Rock and was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and later a charter member of St. Margaret Episcopal Church. He holds degrees from Millsaps College (Go Majors!), Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University, and Columbia Theological Seminary. Before deciding to return to parish ministry, he completed his course work (but not his dissertation) for the PhD at King’s College in the University of Aberdeen (Scotland) in the area of Political/Practical theology.

Rob has served on multiple committees and boards both in the Presbyterian Church and in the larger community. He currently serves as part of the leadership of Mississippi’s statewide chapter of Everytown for Gun Sense in America/Moms Demand Action. In the broader church he is on the Worship Exam Team of the PC(USA) Presbyteries Cooperative Committee on Examinations which writes the standard ordination exams for all PC(USA) candidates for ministry, moderates the Session of Faith Presbyterian Church (USA) in Jackson, and serves on the Church Development/Redevelopment Committee of the Presbytery of Mississippi.

In 2008 Rob joined with a group of clergy to form a group called “The Gathering of Heretics.” The group meets two or three times each year for mutual support, sharing ideas about ministry, and sermon writing and critique. One of the main pastimes of the group is playing challenging games of croquet on the side of a North Carolina mountain, laying out maddeningly difficult disc golf courses, and sampling some of Asheville, NC’s newest breweries.

He is currently working with a group of clergy to create an online liturgical resource for churches using the new Narrative Lectionary.

When he isn’t working, Rob can usually be found in his garden, at Lemuria, binge watching a new BBC show, or indulging his newest passion- baking random things from The Great British Baking Show.

Rob lives in Belhaven with his partner, Brian, their two Welsh Springer Spaniels Willie, and Mo and the newest additions to the household, Welsh Pembroke Corgis, Wednesday and Huck.
